Design Project 2: Milestones
Milestones Summary
-
Team Development and Project Planning
-
Assigned team roles and responsibilities for the next four weeks of the project
-
-
Patient Diagnosis and Need Statement
-
Give a patient profile (Name: Ke Huy-Quan), researched and documented pertinent information from online sources and invited guests (including orthopaedic surgeons and radiologists) in order to determine an appropriate diagnosis
-
Defined a solution-neutral need statement for our client
-
Listed objectives and constraints of our design
-
-
Conceptual Design
-
Generated a preliminary sketch of a solution to address the need statement
-
Conducted research on form and surgical fixation of implant when generating design
-
-
Shared preliminary sketches with team
-
Suggested design revisions for all other designs
-
-
Created one refined concept solution for further development
-
Discussed advantages and disadvantages of design with reference to need statement
-
-
-
Preliminary Design (3D CAD Design)
-
Created a solid model of a femoral stem for a hip replacement
-
Form and dimensions based on a given 3D printed model
-
-
Refine the 3D printed design
-
Additional features (e.g. surface textures, rounded edges) added as seen fit to improve the design
-
-
-
Preliminary Design (Mathematical Analysis)
-
Calculated fracture risk, fatigue life, and bone stress reduction of a hypothetical implant
-
Used fourth-year level bone mechanics formulae
-
Interpreted given materials data sheets
-
-
-
Materials Selection and Justification
-
Researched three candidate materials for two components of the implant
-
Analyzed materials' structure, properties, and processing from research articles and materials data sheets
-
-
Chose one candidate material per implant component and justified decision based on conducted research and relevance to assigned patient

Week 1
Final Diagnosis:
Aseptic loosening of the hip implant due to bone degradation around the implant caused by wear debris of the acetabular liner.
Need Statement:
Design an implant for Ke Huy-Quan to protect his femur from further implant degeneration and polyethylene debris emissions which are causing osteolysis and aseptic loosening of his implant leading to inflammation and pain in his hip.
